Timothy graduated from Taylor University (B.A. Psychology). He served two years in the Peace Corps (Bolivia), and graduated from Texas Tech University (M.A. Philosophy) before moving west to the University of California, Santa Barbara (C. Phil.). His current research involves the epistemology of disagreement.

Timothy and Sandra Torrez were married in 2001. Their son Ian joined the party in 2006 and is a Californian through and through.
