One of the distinctives of Westmont's Chemistry program is that all of the Bachelor of Science students take part in research with a faculty member. Some of our students work with the faculty full-time on research for 10 weeks during the summer. One example of the results of the research is shown on this graphic.
This picture is a 3-D representation (can you bring the two images together into one?) of an iron complex made by Drew Aldrich (2000 graduate). The compound was prepared starting with the amino acid proline. We are hoping to study the chemistry of this molecule and eventually convert it into a carbapenem - a type of beta-lactam that has antibiotic activity.
