December 9, 2006: Performance of "Canticle of Mary", is a large setting of the "Magnificat" from the gospel of Luke. The primary ensemble is orchestra, college choir, 4 soloists, men's chorale, and women's chorale, along with harp, handbells, harpsichord, and organ. The opening statement is an acapella setting of “It is Truly Meet”, a traditional hymn to the Virgin Mary, followed by a triple fugue in diminution with organ and strings. This introductory material opens the way for the main body of the piece, which is the setting of the gospel text. Antiphonal settings of “More honorable than the cherubim and more glorious beyond compare than the seraphim, thou who without corruption gavest birth to God the Word, true Theotokos we magnify thee”, is used in varied voicings throughout the setting of the gospel and comes to the climax in a polyphonic arrangement of the collective settings by both the soloists and the choral forces. A large recapitulation of the opening lines of the gospel, "My soul doth magnify the Lord", ends the work with all performers in full force. Performed at First Presbyterian Church, Santa Barbara, CA
