MANUAL FOR WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS

I. Introduction

Every discipline has its own set of conventions for preparing written documents, including sociology and anthropology. Such variations often create confusion for you when you take courses from a variety of academic departments. To help clarify the matter, we, the faculty of the Sociology-Anthropology Department, developed this manual as a guide for all students taking any sociology or anthropology course. The manual includes information about proper format, style, grammatical and punctuation tips, and other departmental policies regarding written assignments. We hope it will make writing a paper or essay in sociological or anthropological style less ambiguous and will make you a better writer. If you have any questions about the material in this booklet, please consult your individual professor.
