Westmont Health Center

Policies

We believe people have a right and a responsibility to participate in their own health care. To make the health care system work for you, you need to know the services available and how to use them. Your records remain strictly confidential. We do not release information from your records for any reason unless you give us specific written consent. For information about the student insurance policy, please visit Renaissance Incorporated's website.

The Health Center is located next to Armington Hall and across from Van Kampen Hall. Our phone number is 565.6164.

Except for the summer months, vacation periods, and all college holidays, the Health Center is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 12 noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. You do not normally need to make an appointment.

Our staff includes a full-time physician, a physician’s assistant and a registered nurse. They can assess and treat most college health problems.

Life-Threatening Emergencies

Call 911
State the problem and your exact location when you call 911.
If you become ill or injured when the Health Center is closed, your resident assistant (R.A.) or resident director (R.D.) can give you first-aid supplies or help you get to a local health facility.

If your R.A. or R.D. is not available and you want to see a doctor before the Health Center opens, check your student insurance brochure to find out whether the insurance will cover the medical services you receive.

If it will, identify yourself as a Westmont student at the emergency center. They will send you a bill. Bring this bill to the Health Center, and the secretary will help you file a claim with the student insurance company. The insurance company will not make a payment without this claim.

Von's Pharmacy located at 1040 Coast Village Road is the closest to campus. The shuttle stops close by. Telephone: 805.969.4728

Eligibility: The Health Center provides care for all current, full-time students.

Allergy Injections: Students may receive allergy injections only when the doctor is at the Center. They must provide their own antigens with complete instructions from their physicians.

Blood Pressure Checks: Students may check their blood pressure at any time.

Physical Examinations: The Health Center gives physicals without charge to students on athletic teams. Students may get other physical exams, such as DMV Class II Exams and Women's Health Care for a fee.

Immunizations for Travel: The Health Center gives immunizations on a fee-for-service basis.

Transportation to Appointments: The Health Center will make arrangements for students to drive a college vehicle to off-campus medical appointments for a fee.

X-Rays, and Physical Therapy: Health Center staff must refer students for these services.

Extended Illnesses, Bed Care, Medical Excuses: The college does not have an infirmary. Students too ill to remain in their rooms are admitted to a hospital or sent home. Students too sick to go to the dining commons may get meals in their rooms by asking their R.A. for a sick-tray pass and presenting a meal card. The Health Center does not issue excuses for missed classes, tests, or papers. Students must talk directly to their professors about absences.

Women's Health Care Appts: Women's Health Exams require an appointment.

Health Education: Students may use videos, books, pamphlets, and health magazines from the Health Center.

Charges and Insurance: The Health Center receptionist can answer all questions about eligibility and insurance claims. We try to assess insurance coverage before making off-campus referrals so that students are not surprised when they receive bills.

The college bills charges not covered by student insurance, such as prescriptions and transportation, directly to student accounts.
