Potter’s Clay

Potter’s Clay (PC) is a 36-year partnership between Westmont and the community of Ensenada, Mexico. Over spring break, PC comes alongside their partners in Ensenada with the purpose of teaching the Bible to children, providing medical and dental care to the general population, building relationships through sports, completing construction projects around the city, and more. In addition, PC hosts weekend projects in Ensenada in the fall, serving around the city in various ways.

Co-Directors [2]

  • Provide oversight for the ministry as a whole
  • Responsible for providing the vision and spiritual direction of PC 2013-14
  • Delegate tasks to and provide accountability for the rest of the core team in all matters related to the PC ministry
  • Spearhead and coordinate orientation and training opportunities for PC trip participants and update training materials
  • Attend and oversee weekly core team meetings and training
  • Attend all required fundraising efforts
  • Complete a year-end written evaluation of the Co-Director position and responsibilities.
  • Meet with the Director of Global Outreach & Community Engagement on a regular basis for input, accountability and encouragement.

Business Manager [2]

  • Responsible for the financial aspect of the ministry.
  • Provide general oversight of PC’s finances, which includes planning and facilitating all PC fundraising efforts, setting the organizational budget, maintaining accurate financial reports, and submitting check requests in order to ensure timely payments
  • Meet with PC advisor to discuss financial budgeting, account management, and receipting of funds raised
  • Attend weekly core team meetings, training, and meet with the PC advisor on a regular basis for input, accountability and encouragement.
  • During PC week, the business managers oversee the kitchen team as well as steward emergency funds if needed. In addition, the business managers serve in whatever capacity is deemed most necessary by the co-directors and PC advisor.

Publicity Manager [1]

  • Responsible for communicating the ministry of PC broadly to the Westmont student body and specifically to PC participants both before and after PC events
  • Create publicity and promotional materials for activities related to PC. Such activities may include application procedures and deadlines, fundraising events, and/or local service projects
  • Submit venue and equipment reservations for PC events
  • Maintain the PC office, order supplies, and keep an updated calendar of PC events
  • Attend weekly core team meetings, training, and meet with the PC advisor on a regular basis for input, accountability and encouragement
  • During PC week, the Publicity Manager oversees the haircutting & manicure team as well as serves in whatever capacity is deemed most necessary by the co-directors and advisor

VBS Director [2]

  • Responsible for the planning and oversight of the VBS aspect of PC
  • Work with the churches in Ensenada to plan games, Bible lessons, crafts and other appropriate activities for the children of Ensenada to take place during Juntos and PC week
  • Pray over, seek out and recruit prayer and worship leaders to augment the VBS ministry
  • Acquire all materials needed for VBS and ensure their transport to Ensenada
  • Attend weekly core team meetings, training, and meet with the PC advisor on a regular basis for input, accountability and encouragement

Med/Dent Director [2]

  • Responsible for the planning and oversight of the medical, optical and dental clinics that take place through PC
  • Work with the doctors and dentists in Ensenada to plan and staff the clinics
  • Maintain regular communication with our medical point persons in Ensenada in order to ensure that PC is operating in as supportive a manner possible
  • In partnership with the volunteer health professionals, oversee the medical and dental clinic volunteers that will serve in Ensenada during Juntos and PC week
  • Update and maintain the detailed inventory of medicines and supplies before and after Juntos and PC week
  • Attend weekly core team meetings, training, and meet with the PC advisor on a regular basis for input, accountability and encouragement.

Construction Director [2]

  • Responsible for the planning and oversight of the construction projects that take place through PC
  • Plan and oversee the construction projects selected jointly with the Mexico Core Team
  • Solicit monetary and material donations for the construction projects
  • Select and train the team leaders for each project, and oversee the projects during PC week
  • Maintain regular communication with the local construction point persons who have established relationships with PC in order to ensure that PC is operating in as supportive and efficient a manner possible
  • Attend weekly core team meetings, training, and meet with the PC advisor on a regular basis for input, accountability and encouragement.

Sports Director

  • Responsible for the planning and oversight of the sports-related activities that take place through PC
  • Work alongside the Mexico Core Team to plan sports tournaments, surf camps, and street dance outreach for the adults, youth, and children of Ensenada
  • Work with the Mexico Core Team to set a vision for the sports ministry that encompasses all of PC’s activities in Ensenada
  • Solicit monetary and material donations for the sports activities
  • Select and train the leaders for each team
  • Oversee the tournaments and clinics during Juntos and PC week
  • Attend weekly core team meetings, training, and meet with the PC advisor on a regular basis for input, accountability and encouragement.

Transportation Director

  • Responsible for the planning and oversight of all transportation in connection with PC
  • Work closely with both the PC advisor and Westmont’s Risk Manager - including regular meetings throughout the school year - to discuss all PC activities and trips to Ensenada in order to ensure that all proper protocols and preparations are in place
  • Purchase insurance policies for each vehicle entering Mexico on any PC trip
  • Arrange the necessary materials in each vehicle’s “car pack” to ensure that the needed documents, equipment, and money are in place to cross the border and get through toll booths
  • Provide general support to the PC advisor and Westmont's Risk Manager in the event of an emergency - large or small - while in Mexico
  • Attend weekly core team meetings, training, and meet with the PC advisor on a regular basis for input, accountability and encouragement.
