Urban Initiative
Urban Initiative (UI) aims to introduce students to the often harsh realities of inner-city life while seeking to demonstrate Christlike compassion to the impoverished both in body and spirit there. UI also hosts both campus events and urban experiential opportunities throughout the school year to promote discussion and understanding of issues that plague the inner-city, such as racism and poverty.
Co-Directors [2] (Approximately 7-8 hrs/wk)
- Provide oversight for the UI ministry as a whole
- Responsible for providing the vision and spiritual direction of UI 2013-14
- Attend and oversee weekly core team meetings and training
- Delegate tasks to and provide oversight and accountability for the rest of the core team in all matters related to the UI ministry
- Communicate regularly with our ministry partners in various urban centers (Los Angeles, San Francisco, Santa Barbara, etc)
- Oversee and delegate the planning and implementation of the various Spring Break immersion experiences (SBIC trips) as well as the weekend immersion experiences throughout the year
- Participate in recruiting, interviewing, selecting, and placement of SBIC trip participants
- Spearhead and coordinate orientation opportunities for both SBIC trip participants and weekend immersion participants and update training materials
- Spearhead and/or delegate the planning and facilitation of events and activities throughout the year, both on and off campus, that assist in educating the Westmont student body about urban issues and opportunities. Such events and activities may include service projects in Santa Barbara, urban awareness activities and experiences, relevant book/movie discussion groups, etc
- Attend all required fundraising efforts
- Complete a year-end written evaluation of the Co-Director position and responsibilities
- Meet with the Director of Global Outreach & Community Engagement on a regular basis for input, accountability and encouragement
- Pray that our urban ministry and partnerships will bring honor and glory to God!!
- This position reports directly to the Director of Global Outreach & Community Engagement
Business Manager (Approximately 4-5 hrs/wk)
- Responsible for the overall financial well-being of the ministry via account management
- Propose the organizational budget for the year, maintain accurate financial reports, and submit check requests as needed
- Meet with UI advisor to discuss financial budgeting and receipting of funds raised
- Collect, account for, and deposit registration fees from UI trip participants
- Spearhead UI fundraising vision and strategize its implementation in collaboration with the UI advisor
- Attend weekly core team meetings and all required fundraising efforts
- Participate in recruiting, interviewing, selecting, and placement of SBIC trip participants
- Actively plan and participate in orientation - communicating all pertinent financial information to all UI participants
- Assist in planning both the Spring Break and year-round weekend immersion experiences
- Actively participate in the Spring Break immersion experience - location to be determined by need
- Complete a year-end written evaluation of the Business Manager position and responsibilities
- Perform other duties as assigned by UI co-directors and UI advisor
- Meet with the UI advisor on a regular basis for input, accountability and encouragement

- This position reports directly to the UI co-directors and Director of Global Outreach & Community Engagement
Coordinator of Local Urban Initiatives (Approximately 4-5 hrs/wk)
- This position aims to create awareness about local urban issues and provide opportunities for engaging in local urban initiatives
- Provide oversight and support for UI urban ministries (Bread of Life, Westside Ministry, East Side Ministry) and local missionaries to provide opportunities for experiential immersion in local sub-cultures throughout the year
- Oversee and delegate the planning and implementation of the Spring Break in the City Santa Barbara immersion experience - in partnership with the Uffizi Project & Turner Foundation
- Collaborate with the Publicity Manager to bring local urban issues to the campus community
- Attend weekly core team meetings and all required fundraising efforts
- Participate in recruiting, interviewing, selecting, and placement of SBIC trip participants
- Actively plan and participate in orientation - communicating all pertinent SBIC SB information
- Actively participate in the Spring Break immersion experience - location to be determined by need
- Complete a year-end written evaluation of the Coordinator of Local Urban Initiatives position and responsibilities
- Perform other duties as assigned by UI co-directors and UI advisor
- Meet with the UI advisor on a regular basis for input, accountability and encouragement

- This position reports directly to the UI co-directors and Director of Global Outreach & Community Engagement
Publicity Manager (Approximately 4-5 hrs/wk)
- This position is directly responsible for communicating all things related to the UI program
- Develop marketing strategies for and coordinate implementation of any activities, either on or off campus, related to the UI program
- Attend weekly core team meetings and all required fundraising efforts.
- Participate in recruiting, interviewing, selecting, and placement of SBIC trip participants
- Actively plan and participate in orientation
- Assist in planning both the Spring Break and year-round weekend immersion experiences
- Actively participate in the Spring Break immersion experience - location to be determined by need
- Complete a year-end written evaluation of the Publicity Manager position and responsibilities
- Perform other duties as assigned by UI co-directors and UI advisor
- Meet with the UI advisor on a regular basis for input, accountability and encouragement

Travel Coordinator (Approximately 4-5 hrs/wk)
- Assume responsibility and supervision of travel logistics for all participants during both year-round weekend immersion trips and week-long Spring Break immersion trips - to include both transport and lodging
- Arrange all transport and lodging for UI core team planning trips to LA & SF earlier in the year
- Work closely with the UI Business Manager to determine financial need and fund availability for both transport and lodging
- Ensure each vehicle is insured and that each driver is registered and approved via Westmont
- In collaboration with the UI advisor, formulate and update an UI-specific crisis response plan for both year-round weekend immersion experiences and Spring Break immersion trips (SBIC trips)
- Work with the Health Center to ensure total participant access to first aid kits at all times
- Attend weekly core team meetings and all required fundraising efforts.
- Participate in recruiting, interviewing, selecting, and placement of SBIC trip participants
- Actively plan and participate in orientation - communicating all pertinent travel and safety information to all SBIC trip participants
- Assist in planning both the Spring Break and year-round weekend immersion experiences
- Actively participate in the Spring Break immersion experience - location to be determined by need
- Complete a year-end written evaluation of the Travel Coordinator position and responsibilities
- Perform other duties as assigned by UI co-directors and UI advisor
- Meet with the UI advisor on a regular basis for input, accountability and encouragement
