Performance Management
One of the most important responsibilities of leaders is to effectively manage and steward resources, and one of the most important resources they have is the staff they supervise. Managing them (and consequently their performance) begins with designing the job - determining what duties are important to include, what the qualifications are to fulfill those duties and what level of performance is needed to meet the mission of the department, and support the strategic goals of the College.
Performance management is an ongoing, continuous process of communicating and clarifying job responsibilities, priorities and performance expectations in order to ensure mutual understanding between manager(s) and employee. It is a philosophy which values and encourages employee development through a style of management which provides frequent feedback and fosters teamwork. It emphasizes communication and focuses on adding value to the college by promoting improved job performance and encouraging skill development. Performance Management involves clarifying the job duties, defining performance standards, and documenting, evaluating and discussing performance with each employee. All supervisors are expected to participate in performance management.
The objectives of Performance Management are to:
- Increase two-way communication between manager(s) and employees
- Clarify mission, goals, responsibilities, priorities and expectations
- Recognize quality performance
- Identify and resolve performance issues
- Provide a basis for decisions such as promotions, succession and strategic planning
Given that most employees want to be successful, the best way to allow them to do that is to provide clear direction and regular feedback about how they are doing, recognition for their contributions and coaching to continually grow over time. Effective performance feedback is an opportunity for development. This creates a motivating environment for employees to excel and minimizes performance problems.
