The Encyclopedia of Associations

"The Encyclopedia of Associations" is a comprehensive source that lists detailed information concerning thousands of associations and professional societies. A phone call or letter to one of these organizations founded around a specific interest is a good way to gather information pertaining to internship opportunities. Current volumes are available in the Westmont Library and the Westmont Career Resources Library.

Reasons to Utilize Information in the "Encyclopedia of Associations"

  • Gather a wide variety of information pertaining to specific fields
  • Find regional or local groups in your geographic area that are affiliated with larger associations but not easily accessed through other data bases
  • Discover methods to get internships in competitive fields
  • Inquire about membership benefits
  • Obtain lists of agencies related to your field of interest

Requesting Information

Make a list of questions you would like to ask before making your call. Be clear about what you want and why. Have materials on hand to write down information.

Introduce yourself and your purpose:

"Hi. My name is Jennifer Newkirk. I am a student at Westmont College. I found your organization’s name in the Encyclopedia of Associations and I am calling in hopes of gathering information concerning internships. Do you have a minute to talk with me? I am interested in obtaining a list of non-profit agencies that provide counseling services in the Los Angeles area. Does your association provide information like this?"

Ask for supplementary information:

"Is there anything else you can tell me that would be helpful in finding an internship in this field?"

Ask for information concerning membership:

"Are there special student fees?" "What does membership entail and what are membership benefits?" "Is there a local chapter where I could attend meetings?"

Great networking opportunities!
