We have only reached midsummer, and Westmont’s faculty have already been around the world on various teaching or scholarly endeavors. For the "Academic Accomplishments" in this report, I’ve focused on the international work that has been done prior to July.
Among the “Updates and Initiatives,” there are some invitations to participate in new programs or endeavors during the coming academic year. Do let me know if you are interested.
I will be back in New England for the first weeks of July, enjoying some family time, preparing for the moving van, and basking in the humidity. We may cool off by catching the fireworks over the Charles River. Enjoy your Fourth, wherever you are in the world.

Right after Commencement, Westmont's orchestra ventured to China under the guidance of Michael Shasberger and Phil Ficsor. Michael writes, "After our final concert at Shanghai University, the combined orchestras of the two schools along with the Shanghai University Choir posed together following the performance. A joyous occasion for all that concluded with Handel's "Hallelujah Chorus" from "Messiah." Photo: Rebecca Shasberger, Dan Gee, and Kelsey McDougal looking out from the Great Wall.
Deborah Dunn and Caryn Reeder led a group of students and alumni in a Mayterm study of sacred pilgrimage in England, Northern Ireland, and Israel/Palestine. They report that "going on pilgrimage while at the same time deconstructing pilgrimage proved to be fruitful and conflicting for all. Conflict, in fact, was a key word for the trip: conflict over sacred space, political conflict, national conflict (historical and contemporary), conflicting emotions, conflicted identities." The photo shows Caryn recreating a day in the life of St. Kevin, Glendalough, Ireland.
Grey Brothers spent time in Querétaro, Mexico preparing for the Fall 2012 Westmont in Mexico. He climbed the Peña de Bernal, the world's third largest monolith, that looms just outside the city (photo). He reports, "I was delighted to be able to spend this time in Querétaro. My language facility seems to improve daily and the city is lovely and welcoming. I'm making a list of things I want to be sure our students experience while they're here this fall."
