826 National is a nonprofit organization that provides strategic leadership, administration, and other resources to ensure the success of its network of eight writing and tutoring centers, including 826 Valencia in San Francisco. http://826national.org/

A typically eclectic San Francisco creative writing academy founded by award-winning author David Eggers, and disguised as a “Pirate Store” to help kids learn writing can be fun. American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter

Catholic Charities Refugee Services
One of the oldest and best-known social justice agencies in the city, Catholic Charities cares for those who are in the process of escaping human trafficking, domestic abuse and political persecution. Girls on the Run
A social service agency aimed at promoting health, self-esteem and community among underprivileged young women through mentoring and regular city-wide running events. www.gotrbayarea.org
La Casa de las Madres
Thirty years ago, La Casa de las Madres opened San Francisco’s first domestic violence shelter for women and their children. The once-quiet shelter has grown into the city’s leading voice for abused women, their children and teens—educating, promoting awareness and changing the community’s and the media’s perceptions about domestic violence and its victims.
