Johnathan Harrell ’18, the youngest of eight, lost a brother in a car crash two days after Christmas in 2013. The accident critically injured his sister, Janella. Within 24 hours, he played an inspired basketball game for Aurora Christian School in Illinois. “I never talked about Jarred’s death,” he says. “I kept it inside.”
He transferred to Westmont from a public university to better engage in meaningful subjects. “I was at home here, seeing the sunset and being with people who care about my life. It’s just unreal.”
He hadn’t intended to play basketball, but when he met the team, he found a community. “We were sitting in a circle and talking about our lives,” he said. “I felt like I was in the right place with the right people to open up. It has been a huge relief, telling my story. I’ve realized that being vulnerable opens up so many more doors.”
The communication studies major enjoys writing poetry and baking apple pies. He is considering a career in sales, possibly real estate or car sales. “I don’t know where God will take me, but I will honestly enjoy going,” he says.
We come to Westmont from every walk of life. Each of us unique. All of us eager to learn from the others. And even though we’re a diverse community of artists, activists, athletes, musicians, scholars, gamers, and dreamers, we’re connected by a common thread: our deep love for Jesus Christ. You’ll feel His presence in every club you join, game you play, and country you visit. And it’s here, among this culture of Christian values and infinite possibilities, that you’ll discover your passion (or two, or three).
Congratulations! You've been accepted! We hope you join us in a transformative journey of faith and rigorous pursuit of scholarly knowledge on a campus like no other. Confirm your offer of admission and learn more about the fun weekends planned in March and April with the links below.
