Alumni Story - Aaron Barnes '12

Aaron Barnes '12

Aaron Barnes '12 may have graduated from Westmont, but his education has just begun. He enrolled at Dartmouth Medical School this fall and faces four more years of classes and clinical work. "My chemistry teacher recommended Westmont because of its great science and pre-med program., and after 10 minutes on campus, I knew it was where I wanted to be," Aaron says. "Westmont has been so rigorous, it's a great stepping stone to medical school." He double majored in biology and chemistry and found time to be involved with Orientation, Spring Sing, the Class Council and intramural volleyball. Doing summer research last year with chemistry professor Kristi Lazar helped Aaron realize he wanted to work with people rather than spend his days in a lab. Numerous trips to an orphanage in eastern Russia with his church awoke his interest in medicine--he wanted to do more to help the children. "I'd like to treat undeserved people and travel internationally," he says. Orthopedics interests him because he could work with patients of all ages. An internship with an orthopedic surgeon back home in Anchorage, Alaska, and volunteer work in the orthopedic ward at a Santa Barbara hospital have given him experience with the specialty.

Westmont was Aaron's first step in gaining wisdom about the natural sciences. Could it be yours? Discover more about Westmont and our natural science departments by attending Science in Focus. Register today!
