Five Recruits Added to Westmont Men's Soccer

(June 29, 2005) Head Coach Dave Wolf has announced the addition of five new recruits to the Westmont men's soccer program.

Two transfers are expected to have an immediate impact on the Warrior program. Joe Villanueva, a junior transfer from the University of Virginia, is a left-side player who, "is very strong and very athletic," according to Wolf. "We expect him to play either left-back or left-midfield." The 6' 0", 170 pound defender hails from San Marino, California and played for Pasadena Poly.

Westmont Men's Soccer to Tour Europe

(June 29, 2005) As in every year since 1965, the Westmont Men's Soccer team will gather for preseason workouts beginning in early August. Unlike any year before, the Warriors' camp will be on the fertile soccer soil of Europe.

"I have always wanted to take the team to Europe," said Head Coach Dave Wolf, "but the timing just hasn't been right. I made seven European trips as an athlete and know the benefit of putting my team in a soccer rich environment."

Williams Receives All-American Honorable Mention Recognition

(December 7, 2004) junior Luke Williams of Boerne, Texas received Honorable Mention recognition as an NAIA All-American. Williams recorded five goals and six assists in the 2004-05 season, doubling his career totals in both categories.

In September, Williams led the Warrior's to a 3-2 upset of #19 Notre Dame de Namur by recording two unassisted goals (including a golden goal in overtime) and an assist.

"Luke has developed into the best wide player in the region," noted Head Coach Dave Wolf. "To his credit he has added to his game every year. We're glad to have him back and look forward to him adding the final piece to that picture - scoring 15-20 goals for us next year."


Three Warriors Named to All-GSAC Team

(November 3, 2004) Three Westmont Warriors have been named to the 2004 All-Golden State Athletic Conference Men's Soccer team. Junior midfielder Luke Williams, sophomore midfielder Michael Thompson and sophomore forward Blake Thompson where selected for the honor.

Season Ends on High Note, Coach Now #1

(October 30, 2004) Though the Warriors will not be participating in the playoffs this year, the season ended on a positive as Westmont defeated California Baptist 5-0. The first goal came as a result of an own goal by the Lancers, which proved to be the only goal of the first half.

The Warriors added to the lead early in the second half when Carver Peterson passed the ball to Blake Thompson who made a quick, hard shot to score his tenth goal of the year. Sam Hartman scored nine minutes later on a cross from the right side.  Ryan Powers and Ryan Warner were credited with assists on Hartman's goal.

Men's Soccer Wins at Second Home

(October 28, 2004) For the third time this season, and twice in as many days, Westmont played at Al Barbour Field on the campus of Biola University. The new synthetic field turned out to be the only way Westmont could get in all of its games in the midst of an unusually rainy October. The Warriors said farwell to Al Barbour Field with the sweetness of a 5-2 victory over Concordia.

Warrior's Fall to #13 Vanguard

(October 27, 2004) After a day's postponement and relocation to Al Barbour Field at Biola University, the Warriors managed to get in a game against #13 Vanguard. Unfortunately, the game did not go Westmont's way as the Lions defeated the Warriors 3-0.

With a storm brewing, the game remained scoreless throughout the first half with goalkeeper Logan Frank recording three saves. Vanguard broke the ice in the 66th minute on a through ball which Matthew Hess landed for a goal. Nathan Kramer and Mariano Salcedo also scored for the Lions.

Westmont (8-6-1, 3-4-1) will return to Biola on Thursday to face Concordia in a 12 o'clock game. On Saturday, the men's team will wrap up the regular season in Riverside against California Baptist at 3:00 p.m.

Rain Rescheduling

(October 26, 2004) Today's scheduled men's soccer game against Vanguard has been postponed due to rain. The game has been rescheduled for tomorrow, October 27th at 3:00 pm and will be played at Biola University on the new Al Barbour Field.

On Thursday, the Warriors are scheduled to make up a rain postponed game at Concordia at 3:00 p.m.


#3 Azusa Pacific Defeats Warriors 4-1

(October 23, 2004) The Cougars of Azusa Pacific (14-0-1, 8-0) extended their conference lead by defeating the Warriors at Russ Carr Field 4-1. Azusa Pacific held a 2-0 lead at the half on goals by Brandon Stirm and Ferguson Agwu. Andriy Budnyy and Kolt Callaway scored in the second half to put the Cougars up 4-0.

Though Westmont outshot the Cougars 18-9, the Warriors could not get on the board until the 71st minute when J.J. Bailey passed the ball to Kevin Saiki who drilled the shot home. The Cougars had a 7-1 advantage on corner kicks.

The Warriors (8-5-1, 3-3-1) will finish conference play with three games next week.  Tuesday Westmont will host Vanguard and then hit the road for a make-up game at Concordia on Thursday. On Saturday, the Warriors will conclude the regular season at Cal Baptist.


Game Postponed by Rain

(October 20, 2004) Today's scheduled game at Concordia University in Irvine has been postponed due to weather conditions. The contest has been rescheduled for 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 28th at Concordia.

The Warriors next game will be a home contest against #3 Azusa Pacific on Saturday, October 23rd. Game time is 1:00 p.m. at Russ Carr Field.   


Westmont Shuts Out Hawks in 2-0 Victory

(October 16, 2004) Patience was the order of the day for the Warriors who secured a 2-0 victory over Christian Heritage. The Warrior's dominated play in the first half outshooting the Hawks 15-1 and keeping the ball on the offensive end of the field nearly the entire 45 minutes.  However, Hawk goalkeeper Jordan Smith recorded six saves to keep the game scoreless until intermission.

The dominance continued in the second half and patience finally paid off twenty-six minutes after the intermission when sopohomore Blake Thompson scored from the right side. Michael Thompson and Carver Peterson set up the score with great passing in front of the net to give Blake the shot. Senior Richie Alcaraz added to the Warrior lead in the 84th minute, heading in a cross from Joe Cover from the left side.

The Warrior's, who are now 8-4-1 overall and 3-2-1 in conference play, will travel to Concordia (6-9, 2-4) on Wednesday before returning to Russ Carr Field to take on #3 Azusa Pacific (12-0-1, 6-0) on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

The Master's Upsets #21 Warriors With Defensive Strategy

(October 12, 2004) The Mustangs of The Master's College came into Tuesday's contest against Westmont with a game plan which focused on a strong defense, and a counter attack offense. By placing ten men behind the ball on defense, the Mustangs held the Warriors in check offensively and created scoring opportunities for themselves.  The Warriors' 4-0 loss drops the team to 2-2-1 in GSAC play and 7-4-1 overall.

"We got a pretty good shellacking," admitted Head Coach Dave Wolf. "Once you give up a couple of goals you have to press the game a little and [The Master's] tactics becomes even more effective." Luke Barnes scored twice for the Mustangs in the first period. Syian Wignal added two in after the break.

The Warriors will play at home on Saturday at 1:00 pm when they host Christian Heritage (3-8-1, 0-5) in the first game of a men's/women's double header.

#17 Westmont Strives With #7 Fresno Pacific

(October 9, 2004) In a battle between top 20 teams, the Sunbirds of Fresno Pacific defeated the Warriors 2-1 in a well played contest by both teams.

The Warriors scored first, three minutes into the second half when Michael Thompson advanced the ball to Kevin Saiki who was able to finished with a shot 10 yards in front of the goal. After the score, Fresno Pacific (10-1-1, 2-1-1) stepped up their intensity and in the 57th minute, the Sunbirds pulled even when Orlando Ramirez headed in a pass from Fabrico Codeceira. The final goal was came off a penalty kick by Codeceira in the 73rd minute.

Warriors 2-0, Head Coach 200

(October 2, 2004) Westmont Men's Soccer improved to 2-0 in Golden State Athletic Conference play this afternoon, defeating the Point Loma Nazarene Sea Lions (7-2, 1-1) by a score of 3-1.

The win was the 200th career win for Dave Wolf as Westmont's head coach. Wolf is in his 14th season and has amassed a record of 200-61-27 and a winning percentage of .741. Wolf is only two wins shy of matching legendary coach Russ Carr for the most wins by a Westmont men's soccer coach. Carr tallied a record of 202-106-31 (.642) in 17 years at Westmont. Combined, the two have more men's soccer wins than all but three NAIA schools, including Westmont. With 521 wins in it's history, Westmont has more victories than any other NAIA school.

#21 Westmont Wins Conference Opener

(September 25, 2004) Four different players scored to lead the Warriors to a 5-0 victory in their conference opener against Hope International University (1-6, 0-1). Blake Thompson scored just two minutes into the game, heading the ball into the net off a cross from Kevin Saiki. Eight minutes later, Saiki scored on a rebound when Luke William's shot bounced off the keeper's hands.

In the 23rd minute, Williams dribbled down the right side of the field and connected from 15 yards out to give the Warriors a 3-0 lead. Saiki recorded his second assist of the game when he passed to Carver Peterson in front of the net. Peterson's shot from 5 yards gave the Warriors a 4-0 lead going into halftime.

#24 Westmont upsets #19 Notre Dame de Namur

(September 18, 2004) In a seasaw battle between two ranked teams, #24 Westmont triumphed in overtime 3-2 at #19 Notre Dame de Namur (9-2).

Six minutes into the first overtime period, Luke Williams took a pass on the lefthand side. Going one-on-one with the Argonaut defender, Williams was able to break free and get off a perfectly placed shot that went just past the outstreched hands of the NDNU keeper and into the right corner of the net.

Men's Soccer Falls to Redlands

(September 15, 2004) The visiting University of Redlands Bulldogs (3-1-1) took revenge on the Warriors of Westmont with a 3-1 victory at Russ Carr field. A lost to the Warrior's last year was the only blemish on Redlands' otherwise perfect regular season record. The desire to settle the score was evidenced in the Bulldogs' on field hustle and intensity as Redlands outshot the Warriors 13-5.

Westmont (4-2) scored first in the third minute of the game when Michael Thompson dribbled the ball down the middle of the field, beat his defender and connected on a shot from 10 yards out. But the Bulldogs would hold the Warrior's scoreless for the next 87 minutes while scoring three goals of their own. In the 21st minute, Eric Rolwing crossed the ball to Liam Conners who tapped it into the left corner of the net. Just before half time, Seastian Aldaz scored off a corner kick from Sergio Juarez. Three minutes into the second half, Conners would score again from 5 yards.

Westmont will travel to Belmont on Saturday to take on Notre Dame de Namur University in an 11:00 a.m. game.


Michael Thompson Named GSAC Player of the Week

(September 13, 2004) Westmont midfielder Michael Thompson has been named player of the week for men’s soccer by the Golden State Athletic Conference.

Thompson, who hails from Newbury Park, recorded two winning goals over the weekend as the Warriors swept both their games at the Azusa Pacific Cougar Classic. In the first game on Friday, Thompson broke open a 1-1 tie against Pacific Lutheran (WA) late in the first half. With only 14 seconds left before intermission, Thompson took a deflection off the crossbar and sailed it into the net from 20 yards away. The Warriors went on to win the game 3-1.

A defensive struggle on Saturday resulted in a score of 0-0 late in the game against Concordia of (OR). With under four minutes left, Blake Thompson was able to head a ball to Michael Thompson who chipped the ball into the corner of the net and scored his third game winning goal of the young season. With the 1-0 victory, the Warriors improved to 4-1.

Thompson and the Warriors play at home on Wednesday, taking on the University of Redlands at 4:00 p.m.


Men's Soccer Sweeps at Cougar Classic

(September 13, 2004) The Warriors improved to 4-1 over the weekend with two wins at the Azusa Pacific Cougar Classic. On Friday, the Warriors matched up with Pacific Lutheran of Washington and notched a 3-1 victory. Westmont jumped out to an early lead when Blake Thompson scored in the 11th minute off an assist by Sam Hartman. Pacific Lutheran pulled even four minutes later when Mike Ferguson took at pass from Jay Pettit and put it in the net. Seconds before halftime, Michael Thompson put the Warriors back in the lead when he drilled a shot from 20 yards which had deflected off of the crossbar. Richardo Alcaraz sealed the deal with a little over seven minutes to play when he found the back of the net off a pass from Kevin Saiki.

On Saturday, the Warriors seemed to be headed for a scoreless tie against Concordia of Oregon. But with less than four minutes remaining in the game Michael Thompson chipped the ball into the corner of the net. Blake Thompson headed the ball to Thompson for the assist.

The Warriors return home to play the Unversity of Redlands at 4:00 pm on Wednesday before travelling to Notre Dame de Namur for an 11:00 a.m. Saturday game.


Westmont Continues Winning Ways

(August 28, 2004) The Heritage Club Classic concluded today with wins by Azusa Pacific University and Westmont College.

Holy Names University and Westmont College battled it out in the second game which the Warriors won by a score of 3-2. The only goal of the first period came after Luke Williams drew a penalty shot at the 21st minute mark and Blake Thompson drilled the PK into the right side of the net. Strong defensive efforts by both squads kept the teams from scoring for the balance of the first half.

The Hawks of HNU (0-2) evened the score early in the second half when Tobias Edenvik flicked a pass to Marcelo Santos who punched the ball into the net from five feet away.

Men's Soccer Wins on Opening Day

(August 27, 2004) Two GSAC men's soccer programs got off on the right foot by winning their season openers at the Heritage Club Classic at Westmont College. In the first game, Azusa Pacific defeated Holy Names University of Oakland 3-1 while in the late game the Warriors of Westmont (1-0) shutout Cornerstone University of Grand Rapid, Michigan 2-0.

The Warriors (1-0) demonstrated blazing speed and great ball control, outshooting the Golden Eagles 19-6. Sophomore Ryan Warner scored first for Westmont on a corner kick from Richardo Alcaraz in the game's 20th minute. Alcaraz scored the Warriors' second goal on a penalty kick in the second half. The Warriors' came close to scoring several other times including a shot by Kevin Saiki which ricocheted off the crossbar.

Soccer schedules released

(May 25, 2004) - Tentative 2004 schedules for the Westmont men's and women's soccer teams have been released.

The Westmont men will open their season with the annual Heritage Club Classsic on Aug. 27-28, followed by a match-up with NCAA power U.C. Santa Barbara. The Warriors will face NAIA national runner-up and defedning GSAC champion Fresno Pacific at home on Oct. 9, and will host rival Azusa Pacific on Oct. 23.
