Building Updates

July 19, 2016

  • The installation of underground utilities along the east side of Van Kampen Hall is nearly complete. The electrical pull boxes are scheduled for installation this week and they are placing electrical conduit. Once the electrical conduits are covered, natural gas lines and irrigation pipes will be placed in the trench.
  • Construction of the fire lane north of the site, adjacent to the Dallas Willard Center, has been delayed while we wait for input from the Gas Company. The new driveway and loop will be wider to accommodate fire trucks.
  • The installation of the caissons for the north residence building is complete. The caissons or concrete columns for the south residence building have been drilled. The steel reinforcing and concrete will be installed next week. The drilling for the common building is in process. The caissons are being set into the earth 24-38 feet deep to serve as the structural foundation. This structural system allows us to only dig in limited areas, protecting the root environment of the oak trees on site.
  • The plumbing subcontractor is digging the deep trenches in preparation for the installation of sewer lines.
  • The landscape subcontractor will begin building rock walls on the site to retain areas where slopes have been cut to accommodate the north residence hall.
  • The contractor will begin placing gabions, wire cages filled with stone, between the caissons next week. The gabions will support the fill dirt that will serve as formwork for the bottom of the structural slabs.
  • The design team is working with the Santa Barbara County Building Department to obtain the building permits for the structure above the slabs and all other elements of the project.
