FORM AND ANALYSIS

COURSE SYLLABUS
MU 118 Form and Analysis

Instructor: Steve Butler
#2 Hubbard Hall
565-6130 (office)

Schedule: Lecture: M-W 11:30 AM-12:35 PM in Hubbard Hall

Texts: Scores and Recordings.

Course Overview:
Form and Analysis will be scheduling a new major work for each year it is offered. For instance, in the Fall of 1999 MU 118 was primarily engaged in a comprehensive classroom examination of Bartok's "Concerto for Orchestra" by formal analysis. Students also chose another work by Bartok to present as a final project and classroom presentation. Proposals were for a work, or a movement of a work, for four or more instruments with a minimum of five minutes duration.

Grading and Academic Policy:
Students are required to attend all lectures. No more than two absences for M-W classes will be accepted without penalty. Homework listening and analysis is mandatory and must be kept current in order to receive full credit.
