Text: Adler, Samuel. The Study Of Orchestration. New York:
2nd edition W.W. Norton, 1989.
Course Overview:
The study of orchestration will introduce the student to the
complexities of writing, arranging, and transcribing music for
the symphony orchestra. Each family of instruments will be examined
and exercises of transcription, transposition, and score-reading
will offer a solid foundation in understanding orchestral concepts.
Policy:
Students are required to attend all meetings. No more than two
EXCUSED absences for M-W classes will be accepted without penalty.
Homework is mandatory and must be delivered by the due date in
order to receive full credit.
Grading:
Grading will be based on projects; the writing, arranging, and
transcribing of music for the orchestra. Although most projects
will be student-specific, the minimum requirement is transcription
of a three minute piano piece for full orchestra. Composers will
have the option to compose, or to choose, a three minute piano
piece for orchestration.
