Telescope Project

Several donors (including the W.M. Keck Foundation and James L. Stamps Foundation) have provided support to upgrade Carroll Observatory and replace the 16″ reflector with a state-of-the-art 24″ reflecting telescope.

For more than half a century, Westmont has enjoyed a rich heritage of incorporating astronomy into its curriculum, with the presence of an observatory and telescope on campus. Astronomy runs through a broad range of disciplines such as philosophy, the sciences, religion, history, art, and literature. Westmont’s project goals are:

* To incorporate greater use of our telescope into our general education curriculum
* To expand Westmont’s physics program into a physics and astronomy department
* To create a focal point for publishable student-faculty research within the physics department
* To attract more female students to the study of physics through astronomy (traditionally a greater draw to astronomy for females than males)
* To provide a training ground for teaching assistants
* To build upon a proven valuable resource for reaching out to the community by improving its quality and enhancing its accessibility

Science Equipment for Winter Hall

This project is tied to the upcoming construction of the David K. Winter Hall. This building will house the physics, psychology (neuroscience), mathematics, and computer science departments. Much of the equipment that was urgently needed and could be put to immediate use has been purchased with funds raised to date. But additional equipment is needed, some for immediate use, and the balance for direct installation into Winter Hall.

Goal: $2 million
Raised: $636,000
Amount for immediate use: $393,200
Amount for direct installation: $970,800
