We also thank our extended community for their ongoing prayers and concerns.

The Jesusita Fire is now 90 percent contained, with full containment expected May 20. Areas of Montecito, including Westmont, remain under an evacuation warning, and fire officials are monitoring conditions in Cold Spring Canyon carefully. Until the fire is declared fully controlled, officials may need to issue evacuation orders again. While it's safe to be on campus, faculty, staff and students must remain vigilant and be ready to leave immediately should the evacuation order be reinstated.
Our public safety officers will be closely coordinating with local emergency officials to help us respond quickly if necessary. If you see smoke, please report it immediately to 565-6222. We want to validate all reports and minimize false alarms.
As long as there is no change with the fire, Mayterm will continue on campus, and faculty and staff will report to work as usual.

Local fire officials assure Westmont that the campus should remain out of danger tonight and tomorrow. As a result, we foresee no need to evacuate the campus tonight, and students will be able to stay in their rooms.
Faculty and staff should plan to come to work Friday as the college will be open for business and events will proceed as planned. Those with special circumstances (their homes are in evacuation areas or their children are home due to school closures) should discuss the situation with their supervisors.
The fire has grown considerably on the western edge, away from the campus. Please pray for all those who have lost homes or whose homes are in danger and must evacuate. And please remember all the firefighters and law enforcement personnel working throughout the night.

Please pray for all those in the affected areas.

High Winds Forecast to Continue; Smoke and Soot from Jesusita Fire
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department and the Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District today are reissuing an Air Quality Warning for Southern Santa Barbara; areas affected may vary depending on wind direction. Air quality continues to be poor in some parts due to smoke from the Jesusita fire, and winds may stir soot particles from burned areas into the air.
If you see or smell smoke in the air where you are, be cautious and use common sense to protect your family’s health. Everyone, especially people with heart or lung disease (including asthma), older adults, and children, should limit time spent outdoors, and avoid outdoor exercise when smoke is in the area. If you have symptoms of lung or heart disease that may be related to exposure to smoke and particles, including repeated coughing, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, wheezing, chest tightness or pain, palpitations, nausea or unusual fatigue or lightheadedness, contact your health care provider.
Levels of smoke and particles will depend on changes in winds, and the movement of the fire. Residents are also cautioned to avoid stirring up soot particles during cleanup. This Air Quality Warning will be updated on May 7 (or earlier if conditions warrant).

General Information
As of Wednesday morning, the Jesusita Fire has burned nearly 200 acres above San Roque Canyon, about six miles west of Westmont. At present, it poses no danger to campus. Officials have evacuated residents of about 1,200 homes above Foothill Road in the Mission Canyon area, but none are immediately threatened. More favorable winds last night helped firefighters keep the blaze from spreading, and it appears diminished this morning. College officials continue to monitor the situation.
County officials say the fire is making its way northward up the mountain after starting at about 1:40 p.m. Tuesday near Spyglass Ridge Road, west of Inspiration Point. Firefighters with Santa Barbara city, county and the U.S. Forest Service as well as crews from throughout Southern California are battling the flames, and firefighting aircraft have been called to the scene and will be working throughout the day.
Because the greater Santa Barbara area is just coming out of the wet season, the area brush isn’t as dry as it was during the Tea Fire. This has resulted in a cooler fire and slower movement than we saw in November during the Tea Fire. The fire department is concentrating its efforts on the south flank of the fire, where there are homes within half a mile of the flames. There is no wind this morning, but sundowner winds could develop late in the afternoon.
