When should I make travel arrangements for my student to come home for holidays?

We encourage you to make your travel arrangements early for getting your student home and back to campus, especially on holidays. Please avoid having your student miss any classes for travel, due to any tests or important lectures that may take place. Also, always have your student check with their professor if they need to miss a class for travel for any reason. Do not ask them to leave before their finals are over, for finals will not be rescheduled due to travel plans.

Please refer to the Academic Calendar for specific holiday dates and the Registrar's Calendar for final exam schedules.

Westmont offers a free shuttle service, which runs seven days a week, to locations around town such as Coast Village Road (Vons Grocery, CVS, and banks), East Beach/Hotel Mar Monte(Santa Barbara Airbus pick-up), Amtrak train station, Paseo Nuevo Mall, and the downtown library. Most first-year students regularly make use of this convenient and available resource.

Dial-a-ride is another Westmont service that offers rides to students for locations not on the regular shuttle route (such as interviews, UCSB, and doctors appointments). This free service requires the student to make a reservation 24-hours in advance.

Most local churches also operate a shuttle service which brings students from campus to church and back again on Sunday mornings. Students can contact the Campus Pastor's Office to find out church shuttle times and locations. There is also one vehicle available per dorm which can be signed-out for church transportation as well.

Many over-the-counter medications are available at no cost at the health center, such as aspirin, cold medication, vaporizors, cough drops, etc.

What sort of phone service is available on campus?

Residential telephone service, which includes a voice mailbox, is provided in each room at no cost to the students and is shared by the room’s occupants. There are no charges for these services or for on-campus and local calls. The local calling area includes Carpenteria, Montecito, Santa Barbara, Goleta, UCSB and Isla Vista. A personal long distance access code is given to every student with his or her financial check-in paperwork. Long distance charges are conveniently applied to each student’s account and detailed long distance statements accessible through Westmont’s Web site. Westmont’s direct dial long distance is not only convenient for our students (they are able to make calls from any phone on campus), but the rates are also affordable at 9 cents per minute for calls within California and 12 cents per minute for inter-state calls (billed in 6 second increments).

Cellular telephone coverage around Montecito in general is very limited. Westmont’s campus specifically has limitations due to the steep and hilly terrain. Westmont has selected AT&T Wireless Services as the college’s cellular provider for their sufficient coverage in the area.
