IS 116 and 117 City Reports Europe Semester, 2002 Westmont College (back to IS116 / 117 Syllabus)

To encourage the kind of integrative learning that Europe semester affords, you will work in pairs to prepare and present reports (20-25 minutes in length) on one of the cities we will be visiting.

Content. You will want to consider the following in your reports:

• geographic features of the city
• periods in history when the city was prominent
• the most important events associated with the city
• some key monuments and spaces in the city

You will also want to be able to help your peers with more practical aspects of visiting your city, such as:

• layout and major districts
• getting around
• where to go for eating, shopping, fun

Each group will prepare a one-page summary of your historical and practical findings. We recommend that you prepare your one-page summary before leaving for Europe, so all you need do while there is make enough copies and review your notes before presenting.

Tips. Most information you will need can be easily found in guide books (esp. Michelin Green Guides). Your public library should have an ample stock for you to peruse. Cultural, tourism and history web sites will also prove valuable. It will probably be easiest to subdivide the assignment among your group members.

Evaluation. Evaluation will be based on three things:

• timely completion of the preliminary sketch of your report
• appropriately selected and well organized content of your presentation and handout
• evident participation of all members of the group in preparation and presentation

As the syllabus indicates, the report / handout represents 10% of both IS 116 and IS 117.

Due dates

• e-mail a preliminary sketch of the contents of your presentation to Professor Pointer (for cities from Dublin to Haarlem) to to Professor Fisk (for cities from Goslar to Athens) no later than August 1.
• your oral presentations and handouts will be due upon arrival in your cities.
