Luke's Eschatology: The Church in History

1. Luke 4:14-15

Mark 1:14-15 Luke 4:14-15
Now after John was arrested,  
Jesus Then Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit,
came to Galilee, returned to Galilee,
proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.”  
  and a report about him spread through all the surrounding country. He began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by everyone.

2. Luke 8:15

And these are ones sown on the good soil But as for the good soil, these are the ones who
they hear the word and accept it when they hear the word,
  hold it fast in an honest and good heart,
and bear fruit, thirty and sixty and a hundredfold. and bear fruit with patient endurance.

3. Luke 9:23

He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, Then he said to them all,
“If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.”

4. Luke 19:11-27

  As they were listening to this, he went on to tell a parable, because he was near Jerusalem, and because they supposed that the kingdom of God was to appear immediately. So he said,
For it is as if a man, going on a journey, “A nobleman went to a distant country to get royal power for himself and then return.
summoned his slaves He summoned ten of his slaves,
and entrusted his property to them;  
to one he gave five talents... and gave them ten pounds...

5. Luke 21:8, 9, 19

Then Jesus began to say to them, And he said,
“Beware that no one leads you astray.   “Beware that you are not led astray;
Many will come in my name and say, ‘I am he!’ for many will come in my name and say, ‘I am he!’
and, ‘The time is near!
and they will lead many astray. Do not go after them.
When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed; this must take place, but the end is still to come. When you hear of wars and insurrections, do not be terrified; for these things must take place first,
but the end will not follow immediately.”
 . . . . . . . . . .
But the one who endures to the end will be saved. By your endurance you will gain your souls.”

6. Luke 21:20, 24

But when you see the desolating sacrilege set up where it ought not to be (let the reader understand), When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation has come near.
then those in Judea must flee to the mountains. . . Then those in Judea must flee to the mountains. . .
  . . . and Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

7. Luke 22:69

But he was silent and did not answer. Again the high priest asked him, They said,
“Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?” “If you are the Messiah, tell us.”
Jesus said, “I am; He replied, “If I tell you, you will not believe; and if I question you, you will not answer.
and ‘you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power,’ But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.”
and ‘coming with the clouds of heaven.’  

8. Acts 1:6-8

So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?” He replied, “It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Does Luke still believe in Christ’s Second Coming?
Has Luke abandoned all hope for the Lord’s return?
