MÆDEN is a testbed for studying service and was derived from EDEN (Maeden is Multi-agent Eden).  Although it may be useful for other purposes, it provides a Java-based simulated environment that interacts with multiple agents over the standard socket layer.  The testbed supports a simple visual sense of an agent's immediate surroundings, the smelled direction of the goal (food), auditory perception of messages issued by other agents, and several other simple senses.  Similarly, MÆDEN provides effector capabilities to move about the environment, manipulate tools and objects, and send messages to other agents.
