Reflection on Creedal Theology

We have begun this class with both a review of the basic theology you should have learned in church and in doctrine class, and an extension of that theology to contemporary issues and needs in the Church. Here is an opportunity for you to do some extending of your own.

Choose two phrases from the Apostles' and/or Nicene Creed. Articulate each one's meaning as it is worked out in the early Church (drawing especially on Allison, Wilken, and Hall), and show how it describes, directs, could enrich, and/or can correct particular features of the life of the community (preferably a Christian community) of your choice (for instance, your church).

You may if you choose draw out the relationship in the opposite direction, showing how the life of this community describes, directs, could enrich, and/or can correct that part of the creed.

Try to choose the phrases that will yield the most theological insight and practical import, not just the ones whose connections are most obvious.

Please keep your paper four pages, double-spaced, and follow the directions in my handout for writing papers. (Try not to use as many parenthetical constructions when you write as I do.)

Remember, I want to see proper style, clear writing, a thorough answer to the question, and explicit citations of course materials.
