No. 2: Peña de Bernal

August 29,2015. Bernal, Querétaro.

Group photo at Bernal baseAfter a busy first week in Queretaro, on Saturday we headed out for our first excursion, to the town of Bernal. The trip provided a wonderful retreat from city life and an opportunityt to visit one of nature's treasures located less than an hour away from Querétaro.

Climbing up BernalAfter a short bus ride, we began our climb up the Peña de Bernal, the world’s third largest monolith.Though it looked quite intimidating from the bottom, we enjoyed great conversation and scenery as we made our way up the mountain, which sits at about 8000 feet above sea level. At the top, we enjoyed impressive views of the town below, and the peace and beauty of the great outdoors.

Once back in the town of Bernal, we all sat down for some much-needed rest and gorditas, a traditional Mexican dish. With food in our stomachs and a new boost of energy, we spent the rest of our time exploring the charming colonial town. The afternoon came to a close as we re-boarded the bus and headed back to Querétaro—tired, but content with the day we had all shared.
