Favorite Aspect of Westmont: Westmont is where I have met some of the most incredible people – people who are now my best friends, trusted mentors, admired teachers, and overall family. These people influenced, and are continuing to influence, who I am today and who I am striving to be. The intellectual conversations, endless laughter, late night study sessions (which may or may not have turned into McConnell’s Ice Cream runs most of the time), Jesus talks, and so much more are largely why Westmont became my home away from home. I could be completely myself, because these people accepted me for who I was, yet inspired, challenged, and encouraged me to grow in my faith, learning, and personal goals. At Westmont, your education extends far beyond the classroom, for often one encounter with a new friend will teach you something just as relevant, whether it be about yourself, another culture, a different faith, and so on. The community at Westmont is invaluable and unique to every person – thus why I am still here!
Favorite Westmont memory: This is very hard to narrow down, so I'm going to have to put down two. One of my favorites was while I was participating in Westmont Europe Semester and we were spending three weeks in Athens, Greece as our first stop. There was one day where we spent the day swimming in the Aegean Sea, right next to/beneath Poseidon’s Temple. We swam to a giant rock and jumped off it, got chased by jellyfish in the water, jumped off the back of a French couple’s boat while also getting the chance to practice French, and ended the day watching the beautiful sunset from the temple. A crazy, unforgettable day.
Another favorite memory (again, out of about 100) was during a class with one of my favorite professors in the Communication Studies department, Dr. Spencer. He has a very invigorating, interactive way of teaching, and this particular day he walked in with a head-to-toe gangster outfit, including leather and sunglasses. He proceeded to start rapping the lesson. To make it even better, our campus pastor Ben Patterson entered the room also decked in gangster attire and they continued with a dueling rap. I can not tell you how hard I was laughing that day.
Favorite Place on Campus: Deane Chapel, where the choirs rehearse near the Music Department. I spent so much of my time there as a choir member at Westmont, and it holds so many fond memories. This is where many of my deepest friendships were formed, and some incredible faith moments were experienced. Not to mention it has a great history and beauty within its walls.
Why do you work at Westmont? I have rarely been so passionate about one place. I talk about Westmont to just about anyone who would listen and have to be told to stop. I had an unbelievable experience as a student and even after trying to leave for a while, I just couldn’t stay away. The quality of people and hard work that is behind the scenes is incredible – you can feel how much they care about every individual and how much they value integrity, compassion, and above all faith. Westmont has a special place in my heart, and working here is a dream come true. Of course, this is all the cheesy stuff, but it is my truth and I could not be more blessed to be a part of this team.
