Student Mentor Joy Han
A place you call home: Lancaster, CA
Why did you choose Westmont? I came to Westmont because, I got more financial help (compared to the other schools I got into), my older sister attended Westmont (so I thought it would be cool to go to the same school as her), and it is so beautiful here!
What has been an impactful book or movie in your life (besides the Bible =)? Many Colors: Cultural Intelligence for a Changing Church, by Soong-Chan Rah, along with the majority of the books I had to read during my time in San Francisco.
If you had to design a robot to do a task what would you want it do? I would want it to spit out information to me and explain its significance to each piece of information that it shared... or bake yummy desserts, either one is cool.
What is a secret talent/skill of yours? I can carry a lot of grocery bags all at once from the car to the kitchen, because I do not enjoy making second (or more) trips back and forth.
What are you excited for in Trailhead this summer? Honestly, I am so excited to meet everyone, who signs up for the program this summer, and to learn about different ways to practice/understand Christianity. Additionally, I am so pumped to work along side such an awesome group of people and laugh with them.
Favorite thing about going to Liberal Arts College: My mind has been able to really expand at a Liberal Arts College. I love being able to find relationships between other subjects and classes, because it goes to show that things are more connected, intertwined, and complex than we initially know. Although it can be overwhelming to try making all of these connections, it's humbling and worth it.
A favorite professor at Westmont and why: Agh, so many to choose from! I would have to say Professor Knecht! I took his International Politics course when I participated in the Summer Scholars. It is easy to feel like we have to be in a certain class because of the GE requirements. Even though this was a GE class, he reminded us to come to class not because we thought we had to come, but because learning was something we wanted to be a part of. Since then, I have grown to value my education more. To be in school is a privilege, and information from various courses is very valuable as it allows us to contribute to our own education.
