Artist Statement
These images come from a series titled Anonymous. I found vernacular images, digitally sized them, transferred the images to men’s generic handkerchiefs and hand colored the images with colored pencils and powdered pigments from Morocco. They speak to both Time (as the images are about 70 years old) and Memory (as one has to try to figure out something about each figure without seeing their actual face).

Artist Bio
I am a Santa Barbara photo-based artist who works extensively with an archive of tens of thousands of collected vernacular images. I have used these images in a variety of ways over the years, from painting over parts of them with India ink, to cutting and using them in mixed media and in transfers that are then altered.
