You are invited to spend a week of your summer on the campus of Westmont College for a one of a kind Track & Field camp experience in Santa Barbara, California. Athletes entering grades 812 are invited to the camp. Features of this year’s camp will include event training in the following areas.
- Sprints & Hurdles
- Distance & XC
- Horizontal & Vertical Jumps
- Combined Events (Decathlon and Heptathlon)
You will gain valuable experience and insight into your event(s) while working with Westmont College coaches as well as Team USA athletes who train at Westmont year round as a part of the Santa Barbara Track Club at Westmont. Additionally, current Westmont college studentathletes will serve as camp counselors for attending high school participants. Whether you are looking at Westmont as a potential college choice, or simply seeking to improve in the sport, this will be a special week not to be missed.
Campers will stay in the Westmont College dorms and have meals in the campus dining commons. Counselors will lead group activities off of the track in addition to enjoying time in Santa Barbara.
About Westmont Track & Field
Both the Men’s & Women’s teams won the 2015 Golden State Athletic Conference Team Championship. The conference team titles marked the first ever “double” win for Westmont Track & Field and the first championship for the women’s program. Coach Russell Smelley enters his 37th year as the leader of indoor/outdoor Track & Field and Cross Country at Westmont.

Westmont Head Coach, Russell Smelley
Coach Russell Smelley has served as the head coach in Track and Field and Cross Country at Westmont College since his arrival in 1979. His tenure has produced 75 NAIA AllAmericans and National Champions with a total of 168 All American Awards. Additionally Coach Smelley’s teams have earned numerous NAIA AllAmerican ScholarAthlete Certificates. In 1994, Smelley was named the NAIA National Coach of the Year. Coach Smelley was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 1999. In 2016, Smelley was named the USTFCCCA West Region Coach of the Year. Coach Smelley received the National Coach of Character Award in 2015 from the NAIA.
Westmont Assistant Coach, Josh Priester
Coach Josh Priester serves as an Assistant Track & Field Coach at Westmont College in addition to being the Executive Director of the Santa Barbara Track Club. Priester works with the combined events and jumps for both the Westmont and SBTC programs. Coach Priester has served on USA National Team staffs as both an assistant and head coach. In 2015, the SBTC placed 5 athletes within the top10 in the United States in the heptathlon and decathlon, including the 2015 USA Outdoor Champion and 2016 Indoor Champion, Barbara Nwaba.
Camp Assistant Coach, Barbara Nwaba
Nwaba is currently one of the top ranked heptathletes in the world with a personal best score of 6,500. Nwaba is the reigning USA National Champion in the women’s heptathlon (2015) and pentathlon (2016). Nwaba served as an Assistant Coach at Westmont during the 2013 Track Season. Nwaba is a native of Los Angeles, California and graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2012.
Camp Assistant Coach/Guest Speaker, Tom FitzSimons Jr.
Coach FitzSimons joins the camp staff for the first time in 2015. FitzSimons is a Three Time USA Qualifier in the Decathlon and secured a Bronze Medal finish at the 2014 USA Outdoor Championships as well as a 4th place finish at the 2015 USA Championships. Coach FitzSimons currently works with the pole vaulters at Westmont. A native of Hamden, Connecticut, FitzSimons graduated from Mt. Saint Mary’s in 2012.
Camp Assistant Coach/Guest Speaker, Lindsay Schwartz
Coach Schwartz enters her second year as a Clinician at the Westmont Track & Field Camp. A Three time USA National Team Member, Schwartz has been with the Santa Barbara Track Club since 2013. Coach Schwartz is a two time international medalist in the heptathlon, earning a bronze medal in the 2013 Thorpe Cup and a silver medal at the 2014 Pan American Combined Events Championships. A native of Watertown, Wisconsin, Schwartz graduated from the University of South Alabama in 2012.
