Warriors Finish February on Winning Streaks

The Westmont men’s golf team won second place out of eight teams at the inaugural Westmont Invitational held at Sandpiper Golf Club February 24-25. Freshman Lorne Fishburn of Corrales, New Mexico, shot the best score of the third round and finished tied for second among individual golfers. Trevor White claimed fourth place at the tournament, just four strokes behind the leader. Freshman Kat Bevill of Crystal Lake, Illinois, finished with the lowest score for the Westmont women’s team.

No. 15 Westmont baseball has been on a roll, winning series from San Diego Christian, The Master’s and No. 14 William Jessup to start the season. The Warriors are two games ahead of Vanguard and Hope International in the GSAC standings. Westmont right-hander Jameson Kruger of Redwood City was the GSAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week after throwing a complete game shutout against San Diego Christian on February 21. He followed that up with another 7-inning, complete game victory against The Master’s on February 28, lowering his ERA to 1.69.

The Westmont men’s and women’s basketball teams won GSAC Regular Season Championships and will host GSAC Tournaments at Murchison Gym as No. 1 seeds. The men, ranked No. 6 in the NAIA, finished the regular season two games ahead of No. 20 The Master’s and No. 16 Menlo. The women, ranked No. 3 in the NAIA, upset No. 2 The Master’s 56-44 on February 22 and finished the regular season one game ahead of the Mustangs. The men’s and women’s GSAC Tournaments March 5-7 in Murchison Gym.

Five Westmont track and field individuals and one relay team won their respective events at the Gaucho Round-Up at UC Santa Barbara February 22. The meet included athletes from UCSB, Westmont and Pepperdine. Seth Wilmoth (pole vault), Jack Dickinson (javelin), Pieter Top (110-meter hurdles), Emily Parks (400-meter hurdles) and Ty Hernandez (400-meter hurdles) all took individual victories, while the men’s 4x400 relay team crossed the line in first.

The women’s tennis team, ranked No. 14 (3-1 GSAC, 4-7 overall), rebounded from a 4-0 loss to No. 20 San Diego Christian on February 28 to beat Hope International 4-0 on February 29, both at home. The men’s tennis team (1-2 GSAC, 1-4 overall) dropped its two matches against No. 18 San Diego Christian and Hope International after winning it GSAC opener against Marymount.

Westmont swimming finished first among NAIA schools in the 2020 Pacific Collegiate Swimming Conference Championships. Westmont is preparing for the NAIA National Championships on March 4-7 in Knoxville, Tennessee.
