On or off the field, the game itself sets the stage for brotherhood to exist, long after the final whistle blows.

A special part of the Westmont Soccer Program is that it sits within the context of a Christian education. The sport and The spirit have an opportunity to collide, creating a unique experience for a college athlete - "For him, from him and through him are all things. To him be the Glory."

To play the game at such a high level, for this many years requires support. This piece is dedicated to the parents of the players, to the coaches supporting a player’s growth, the teammates that make us better, and of course… the FANS. (We all need FANS!)

We did it

This piece celebrates the collective win, done together and WITH each other. Prolific is the image of celebration that brings back that memory of that particular goal, that win, that season. A moment of celebration runs through every team. No matter how small or how large that moment was, celebration is present.

Celebration 1
Artist: Dane Howard
16x16
Digital

This is the first piece of a series of experiments that use the technology behind Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to ‘Teach’ a computer to learn what a theme like ‘celebration’ looks like & feels like. Fed by the Westmont photography archive, tailored by artistic style & artist chosen palettes, this piece represents the promise of a ‘Celebration Engine’ of expression & opportunity - The piece is then digitally painted and tailored by the hand of the artist.

Unforgettable Fire
Artist: Dane Howard
16x16
Digital

This piece draws from the theme of celebration, but is also inspired by the songs and album art of every pre-game and post game playlist. U2 was not only the band behind our pre-game ritual, but a soundtrack to the soccer experience of many alumni. For those of you that remember, when you had Bono on your side, you could do anything. Unforgettable Fire also draws on the inward drive, passion and desire to excel at the highest levels.

Heritage Bond

Artist Statement: It’s a daunting task when you are approached to encapsulate the Heritage of a program like Westmont Soccer. The emotions of the victories, defeats, preparation, and sacrifice of the journey are a cinematic flood of information and memory that cannot be harnessed. Yet, these are only my singular experiences not those of the hundreds who played before or now those of the hundreds who have played since. Nor could an image of football explain the bond, connection and support of lives shared long after leaving the field. The Heritage of Westmont Soccer rests in the bonding of men and women. Therefore, the image displayed is a moment of celebration that literally reflects this Heritage bond. Moments like these occur for every generation who have worn the jersey of a Warrior. The specific team/generation of players is irrelevant. In football there will always be fashionable trends in the game some here are displayed and others manipulated for the universal purpose of evoking Heritage Bond in all of us!

Prismatic Rhythm

Artist Statement

The title of my piece is PRISMATIC RHYTHM.

Prismatic – Colors varied and brilliant.

Rhythm – A strong, regular, repeated pattern of movement or sound.

When asked to make a painting for the “Heritage Collection” I was honored and filled with joy. I attended Westmont for a year in the early nineties. Both my mother and father went to school here and many of my friends as well.

For this project I set out on a journey to create an image with formal language that runs and carries a message of faith, hope and love. Westmont was very generous to share a wealth of imagery from their archives from their renowned soccer program. After reviewing the images, I sat down to reflect and started asking myself questions.

  • What does faith require? Strong belief, confidence and purpose.
  • What is hope? The idea and expectation of something to happen.
  • What is love? Love is the ultimate sacrifice of the self.

Prismatic Rhythm is a painting portraying members of a sisterhood and brotherhood, a diverse group of young warriors in unison, working together as a whole for a common good. The primary principle functioning in “Prismatic Rhythm” is movement with team members working together in harmony with hope for a common goal and purpose. Warriors believing in lessons taught and learned, have developed faith in their unity. The team unites within the composition becoming one. They strive together with confidence and purpose to take the team home to another victory.

Affinity
Artist: Dane Howard
16x24 or 24x36
Oil on canvas

This piece captures a huddle of togetherness located at the base of the Santa Barbara Hills. One of the extraordinary gifts of playing soccer at Westmont is the environment by which we get to play this game. It’s the backdrop of every home game and a uniquely suited landscape to train & also host opponents. It’s also one of the reasons that has attracted many teams from across the world to train at the facility. This piece was inspired by the Affinity of the game, our teammates, our coaches,  as well as the incredible landscape which is the backdrop of our experience at the Westmont Campus.

Season 1
Artist: Dane Howard
16x20
Digital

This series leverages the technology of Artificial Intelligence & machine learning, and is a reflection of what it would look like to teach a computer model about ‘togetherness’ -By exploring the huddle, and exploring input / output of the theme, the artist moves from 'creator' to 'curator' - mirroring the behavior of a coach. Training and output run parallel to the training and output themes of the game. This series explores the cadence and the rhythms of the huddle. Configured in variations of 12 panels each, Huddles are arranged as separate, yet cohesive moments, as if a snapshot of every game, home or away is visualized into one… collective season…

Season 32
Artist: Dane Howard
24x48
Digital

If you extend days into weeks, weeks into games, and games into seasons and Seasons into years… You get a large body of work. As a special tribute to coach Dave Wolf, I present ‘Season 32’ - a visual representation of every team, every cohort under his tenure. 32 years of curating talent. 32 years of coaching, 32 years of mentoring, and …32 years of togetherness.

Each 6 inch panel in this 4 x 8 grid brings a quantitative significance and visual impact to years of service Dave & his wife Jill have given to the program. 32 seasons is a tribute to Dave Wolf, his love for the game, the young men and women he helped shape, and the meaningful legacy he will leave.
