Homegrown Healing: A New Pipeline for Local Healthcare
In a move that strengthens both local education and regional healthcare, Westmont has launched a landmark partnership with the San Marcos High School Health Careers Academy. The new agreement creates a guaranteed pathway for aspiring medical professionals to attend a premier Christian liberal arts college right in their backyard.
The partnership, approved by the Santa Barbara Unified School District, offers academy graduates with a 3.5 GPA or higher an automatic merit scholarship to Westmont worth at least $15,000 in institutional aid, making a commitment to support homegrown talent.
“This partnership is a tremendous opportunity for our students and a powerful example of what local collaboration can achieve,” said San Marcos Principal Dare Holdren.
Westmont embraced the initiative to support the Santa Barbara community. As the academy celebrates 25 years of preparing students for the medical field, the college seeks to help retain professionals who deeply understand the culture and needs of Santa Barbara.
“This partnership will foster and support homegrown talent and strengthen our regional healthcare infrastructure for years to come,” says Irene Neller, vice president for enrollment, marketing and communications at Westmont.
By working to create this direct pipeline into STEM and nursing fields, Westmont and San Marcos address the vital need for medical professionals. For students, the agreement transforms a daunting career path into a clear, supportive journey as they move from a high school academy to a world-class college and eventually into a career of service and healing within their own community.
As Superintendent Dr. Hilda Maldonado noted, the collaboration ensures students have a powerful opportunity to pursue careers that “strengthen our community” from the inside out.
