Biography/Details
Professor Smelley graduated from the University of Richmond and earned his Master of Education there. He joined the Westmont faculty in 1979. He teaches kinesiology and physical education while serving as the men’s and women’s head coach for cross country and track and field. He has twice won Westmont’s Social Sciences Teacher of the Year award. He was named Cross Country National Coach of the Year in 1994, was inducted into the NAIA Coach’s Hall of Fame in 1999, and received the NAIA National Coach of Character Award in 2015. He presented the benefits of a written coaching philosophy at the Global Coaches House during the 2012 London Olympics.
