Dr. Thomas Jayawardene will be retiring this summer after 32 years of service to the Westmont community.
Third World Studies
Research Interests: Youth employment, unemployment and terrorism, cross-cultural communication studies, sociology of world religions, inequality and global development, sociology of education
Dr. Jayawardene earned a doctorate in sociology at the University of Surrey (England), a doctorate at the International University for Social Studies (Rome), a doctorate at the Goethe Institute, Munich, (Germany), and a Licentiate in Sacred Theology and a Licentiate in Philosophy at the Pontifical Urban University (Rome). He came to Westmont in 1988 after teaching at Indiana/Purdue Universities, Harvard, University of Nigeria, St. Peter’s College (Sri Lanka), University of Sri Lanka and University of Surrey. His awards and grants include: Teacher of the Year at Westmont, grants from Oxford and Harvard, Pope Paul VI Award from the Vatican, and Goethe Scholar in Germany. He co-founded the Children of Joy Orphanage in Sri Lanka and has been involved in numerous international charitable organizations.
