Candidate Recruitment and Support
2.1 The education unit accepts applicants for its educator preparation programs based on clear criteria that include multiple measures of candidate qualifications.

2.2 The education unit purposefully recruits and admits candidates to diversify the educator pool in California and provides the support, advice, and assistance to promote their successful entry and retention in the profession.

The Education Department pays particular attention to diversifying the California educator pool. Our candidate pool has diversified over the past ten years--a reflection of both our department’s purposeful recruitment and support, but also the significant institutional efforts to diversity the student body and become a hispanic-serving institution.

The small size of our program provides the opportunity for extensive support for our candidates prior to admittance, throughout the credential year, and in some cases, into their first years of teaching. All Education Faculty serve as advisors and collaborate in bi-weekly department meetings to monitor student progress and identify support for struggling students.

2.4 Evidence regarding progress in meeting competency and performance expectations is consistently used guide advisement and candidate support efforts. A clearly defined process is in place to identify and support candidates who need additional assistance to meet competencies.
