Anthropological Adventures in the Andes, Amazon, and Pacific Coast of Peru

Explore the discipline of cultural anthropology as you experience the diverse cultures and regions of Peru. Abstract concepts and theories will come alive through immersive and extensive on-site study and travel, cultural engagement and interaction with Peruvian scholars, local church communities, and non-governmental organizations. Topics include family life, belief systems, tourism, globalization, economic systems, sustainability, and the persistent influences of the Conquest and colonialism on present day life among others. This program includes visits with urban, rural, and indigenous communities; local churches; and important historical and archeological sites in the coastal, Andean, and Amazonian regions of the country. Applications are due Nov. 15.

The first week of this month-long program is spent on Westmont’s campus before departing for Peru. This general education program is designed for students from any major but also fulfills a requirement for the Cross-Cultural Studies Track in the sociology major and the anthropology minor. The program has no course or language pre-requisites. To facilitate communication, daily life, and cultural adjustment, students without previous study of Spanish or those who wish to strengthen their linguistic skills will receive informal Spanish language instruction throughout the program. The program is designed to accommodate varying levels of academic ability, making it accessible to those with prior background and those approaching the material for the first time.  However, curiosity, flexibility, openness, respect for differences, an adventurous spirit, and a desire to learn deeply through practical application, immersive experiences, and intensive study are required for successful participation.
